Sept. 4th 2009 Heading to Fallon, NV.
A Visit to “Top Gun” fighter school in Fallon, NV

We woke up early the next morning in Folsom. I managed to get a really nice morning run in through the cool bike trails in Folsom. It was so pretty and the weather was perfect. We met up with Trenna’s family and friends for some breakfast and we were then on our way out. On to Fallon, NV! It was roughly a 3 hour drive and it was beautiful. We saw a lot of pretty rock formations and the sky got bigger and bigger as we drove further into the desert. We had fun on the trip, cracking jokes and listening to the radio, they have some cool stations out there, great music selection!
Today we were in for some more fun because we were not only going to be playing the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon but we were actually going to go visit the Naval Air Station, Fallon Nevada. It where they have “Top Gun.” Top gun is where selected Navy Pilots go for even more extensive training in air combat. Top Gun had previously been located in Miramar, CA. but was moved to Fallon in 1996. I could easily see why with all of the vast stretch of desert and possibly due to a lot of our activity being desert oriented these days.
The minute we got into town, we were on our way to the airbase to check it out. Being a major military jet enthusiast, I was so excited! A Public Relations gentleman for the Navy greeted us. His name was “Zip.”
We were on our way up to the aircraft control tower! It was amazing! We went up an extremely steep flight of steps and there we saw all kinds of computers, monitors, radars and various Navy guys monitoring the systems and surrounded by a totally panoramic view of the runways and base. The officers were very know legible (thank goodness!) on all the happenings going on around them with the various fighter aircraft flying maneuvers and running drills. We’d just missed the F-22 stealth fighters the week before! Whaa! But we did see plenty of F-18’s, F-16’s , F-20’s and other planes. They painted some of these planes to simulate the enemy the pilot would be flying against. They also had a couple of enemy choppers. It was unbelievable. They were just finishing up training for the day and I actually got to help send a couple of jets up for wingman maneuvers! Everyone was so sweet to answer our questions and show us what equipment did what.

Afterwards, we took a walk through an outdoor museum of fighter jets, both friend and foe some back from Vietnam, some more modern. We took some cool pics!
We visited some of our men and women in uniform and then we were on our way to the Officers Club where we had a beer with the Commander of the base and others. It was a really neat place and everywhere you looked, you saw plaques of fighter pilots who graduated Top Gun, and plaques of memorials of pilots who’d fallen. It was like every team who’d been there had left their mark at the club. A lot of photos and even an ejection seat from an aircraft! Cool!
After the tour, we pretty much had the evening off to relax, go get a bite to eat.

Sat. Sept. 6th Gig at The Cantaloupe Festival Fallon, NV.
Horses and Cantaloupe Daiquiris, anyone?

Today was the day of our gig. We all just kind of went along at our own pace. Debbie and Trenna took a cool offer from Zip to go ride he and his Wife Nancy’s beautiful Arabian horses in the desert! From what I heard, they really liked to take off and go, and at sound check, Debbie and Trenna were walking with a slight “waddle.” But they had a wonderful time! They said that it was a little bit sandy out there, but it didn’t stop them from taking it in, well quite literally. Ha. I keep hearing the song line “ I’ve been in the desert on a horse with no name..,” ha. Okay, enough of that.
The festival was all about having a good time., we knew that as we pulled up and saw people playing mud volleyball. I wanted to do that! They had all kinds of food there, games and rides, but what really hooked some of us was when we were greeted by a nice bunch of ladies who brought us “cantaloupe daiquiris. Ha! How fun! So, our sound check was a little more “fruity.”
Afterwards, we went back to the hotel, some ate, some freshened up, and we went back to the festival and had a really fun show! The crowd was great and the eve was lovely. The desert full moon was out and it was grand. Afterwards, we got to meet with everyone and then we were whisked away back to the hotel because we had an early morning of travel. We were flying out of Reno. It’s been one heck of a cool weekend! What a blast! Thanks so much everyone for your kindness. We’ll see you again soon!

“We landed ourselves in Folsom Prison!”

We just got back from an awesome weekend out! We found ourselves in some of the coolest places!

Wednesday, we flew out of Nashville and arrived in Folsom, CA. later that eve. We got to take in some good food and sights before calling it an eve. Our show was the next day at a place called “The Powerhouse Pub,” right in downtown Folsom. As you all know Folsom is the home of “Folsom Prison”, made famous by Mr. Johnny Cash’s song “Folsom Prison Blues.” Now Johnny never officially do time in Folsom Prison, however his song shot the prison into major popularity. So we were bound and determined to go see the prison the next day and try to get as many pictures as possible. We were told that due to the prison still being active and functioning that they didn’t allow tourists past a certain point of the grounds. Ha., since when has that ever stopped Cowboy Crush? That’s the worst thing you can tell us.

The next morning (Thurs.), we went to the local radio station “The Wolf” to take part in a special tribute/dedication to our troops. It was really nice to hang out with everyone and we had a great time. They played “He’s Coming Home” and we interviewed for a while. Afterwards, we went to a local Waffle House and then we were on our way out to go see the prison.

We followed a long road off the beating path straight to the parking lot of the prison. Immediately we all had our cameras out and were taking photos of this amazingly beautiful place. It kind of looked like a castle.

We then decided to find our way to the main entrance area of the prison, past entrance gates and we found this sign. How amazing! They don’t mess around! As we read the sign, one by one we were looking like we weren’t going to be permitted to do much. Then we realized that this sign was meant for visitors for the prisoners themselves and not strolling tourists.

We decided to waltz on ahead, through the main gate a little bit closer into the area. The prison was so pretty, yet kind of menacing all at once. There was a guard house nearby and we decided to go greet them and see the museum nearby. We were greeted by a gentleman, Sgt. Downer. He was really sweet and was open to tell us a lot of cool things about the prison. As we hung out, we ended up meeting several other guards. What happened next was the coolest thing! Due to there being a prisoner that had to be transported from the prison and a few extra guards and the very kind lady guard named Kim (who, throughout the time actually told us that she isn’t usually this nice, but felt like it!), decided to let us take a guided and “well guarded” trip through the prison guided by Sargent Dave Harris! We were beside ourselves. They had to do background checks on each of us and actually we ended up running back to our hotel to swap out clothes in order to best comply with the prison rules. Also, they were very explicit about letting us know that there was a “no hostage policy,” meaning that if by chance any of us were taken hostage, that the best that they can do is negotiate, but that we were on our own. That being said, we were led down to the front entrance of the prison and from there we were taken into a security area, screened and scanned for metal and whatever else was not permitted. They gave us passes and a couple more guards to follow up the rear. This is something that they never do!

First, we passed by “China Garden.” It was once used to grow all of the food for the prisoners right there on the grounds. Speaking of the actual grounds inside the prison, they were immaculate! The prisoners did a wonderful job of keeping it trimmed and planting flowers. No trash, all green, lovely.

Sargent Dave took us through each one of the buildings of different cells. Prisoners were placed according to their level of danger and behavioral points. 1-2 buildings being pretty laid back, and we noticed being taken in a couple of the cells how privileges to have certain prisoners were earned. Cells of what you would call “Level 3-4 “ prisoners were clear of anything that could potentially hurt another prisoner. But a “Level 1-2” prisoner could have things like safety razors, can openers, etc. in their cell. The cells for the “striving to be better” prisoners also were a little more roomy and a little more “comfy.” Some had t.v.’s. But all of these spoils had to be earned by a prisoner through good behavior and strives of excellence. They have various “reprogram” programs for inmates there. Everything from workshops to become a mechanic, to school for inmates to get their GED’s etc. They even had opportunities for inmates to work and make money, the “top job” being making license plates for the state, paying $165.00 a month. They had a library, and a store for prisoners to be able to go in and buy extra food and even ice cream if permitted!

There were plenty of guards around on duty, brandishing firearms and other not so lethal forms of armament. We were told that over the years, guards had been outfitted with more “mediatory” forms of weaponry because so many prisoners had died over not so lethal situations. The guards had big canisters of the toughest mace known, tear gas, concussion weaponry etc. They have fights within the prison, but usually only last about 30 seconds, usually because the factions get tired out. The officers seemed to take on kind of a “mediatory stance” rather than try to jump square in the middle and risk lives., unless absolutely necessary.

Probably one of the wildest moments was when they walked us through the actual prison yard where inmates hung out, played basketball, mingled and worked out. They all seemed to have their “group” or side of the yard to hang out in. But we were literally shoulder to shoulder with them! They were respectful though, and would make room for us as we came through. Throughout the tour, we were close to prisoners, but they all were on their way about their duties. As we walked through cell areas, we could see prisoners behind bars poking shaving mirrors out the bars of their cells to see what was going on as we walked through.

We actually walked through the cafeteria where Johnny Cash had performed.

For each day that a prisoner was good, it was one day less that they had to spend.

There were various things that a prisoner could sign up to take part in, including religious services. We were told that some inmates would sign up just so they could get out of their cell for a while and break up the monotony. Also the whole issue with one prisoner watching the other’s back.

They had special housing for prisoners to visit their wives from Thursdays to Sundays on grounds. I won’t say what they actually called these places! The wife can actually come and stay through the weekend. Some prisoners actually get married just so they can have the visits.

They also had a hospital for the inmates where they could do checkups, and go to if they’re injured.

They showed us the offices of the guards and they were literally cells also! Really small, minus beds, but had desks.

We were so blown away by this whole experience. After the visit, we left the grounds totally stoked. How amazing it was to walk through, be amongst some of the most dangerous, yet to see how organized and disciplined they were. I’ll go home back to Nashville and when I play “Folsom Prison Blues” it’ll never be the same.

We got back to our hotel, and then were on our way to do sound check at “The Powerhouse Pub.” The show went really well and some of our cool prison guards showed up! We were going to head out in the morning for “Fallon, NV.”

Victoria, KS. Herzogfest August 8th 2009

Hi everyone! I’m writing to you from Victoria, KS. Home of the Herzogfest! We just pulled in less than an hour ago and are getting ready to go do sound check. We left last night around midnight, and slept through the night. As we got into Kansas, it started to get really windy! The poor bus driver had quite a battle trying to keep the bus steady. It’s going to be a hot sound check, it’s over 100 degrees right now, but our show will not be until tonight and things will be cooling off by then. Wow, it is windy out there right now though! We’ll be drinking a lot of water today and hanging out in the shade!

(On our Way home!)

Hi! We’re on our way home from our show in Victoria, KS.

Last night rocked! We had a really good show and one heck of a crowd. We had some really nice company show up., Trenna’s dad “Delbert” and a sweet sister who used to tour with us and play kick butt drums, “Bree Plaster.” We all hung out on the bus and caught up on stuff. It was so nice to see Bree and Trennas dad.

The organizers of the festival were so sweet and accommodating. They treated us to lunch, and made sure that we had plenty of snacks, water etc. for the day. There was a bunch of really sweet high school/junior high gentleman that helped Eric out with gear, set up etc.

The wind died down along with the temperatures by show time and the evening gave way to clear skies and a beautiful full moon.

We had so much fun during our show and made a point to go out into the crowd and fiddle away a little.

Afterwards we got to meet everyone, sign CDs, pictures and festival shirts. Trenna even did some “fancy artwork” on a blushing high school gentleman’s chest!

We bussed out around midnight last night and we’re still bussing it home. Trenna just told me that this is “Kenny Rogers” bus. Pretty cool!

Another successful trip, we met some really nice folks and got to hang out with some friends and family. Thank you Herzogfest!

August 2nd New Paltz , NY. Ulster County Fair
Howdy! We left Saturday eve। For a looong bus ride up to New Paltz , NY. It was welcoming though after all of the craziness of the week. We ended up having two drivers for this trip. That was really nice and a lot safer! We
drove though the night, all was well until we hit New Jersey. The bottom dropped out of the clouds and there was torrential rain! The interstates were flooded to the point where traffic was backed up and water was coming up over the wheels of cars. I’d never seen interstates flooded like that before. It slowed our progress getting to the gig by roughly an hour to an hour and a half. By time we got to the outdoor festival, we were to have supposed to already been on stage, but they were totally understanding because their weather had been just as threatening. I think we broke a speed record though by time we did get there. Due to the cool crew that had all dialed up for our arrival, Brice, our drummer flying in from a previous gig and be able to set up his kit, and all of our helpful Thunderheads from radio to help us offload gear. We were sound checked and ready to play within about thirty minutes! We were slated for two shows and even though the weather did affect the crowds a little bit, all went well and us along with the audience had a great time. The weather cleared out too! Having the second driver really paid off, because after the show, we were able to shower and head back home! We ended up getting back the next day a lot earlier than previously thought, which is always cool because it’s always nice to not to have to spend your day off traveling home.

July 26th Pierce, Nebraska
Pierce County Fair

Hi everyone! We’re on our way home from the Pierce County Fair in Nebraska!
It’s been a fun trip. We left Saturday around midnight, did our show last night and then bussed out again. It’s been a long trip there and back but a relaxing one. Last night went really well! We got into Pierce around 3ish, and when we arrived, they were having a demolition derby! It was so wild to watch! They had a huge dirt pit arena and wow, the cars were smashed! It was a really cool hometown fair, with rides and the air smelling beautifully fragrant of carnival funnel cakes, hotdogs and grilled/ barbequed stuff. The weather was perfect too! After the derby later that eve, they rolled out the old flat bed truck and we did a down home kick butt show! People got a kick out of us and after the show they had fireworks to close out the festival with. We signed pictures, people’s shirts and foreheads! Ha! We’ll be heading up to New Paltz, NY. Next. Looking forward to it! Many thanks to the Pierce County Fair for having us, it was really neat and we felt really at home.

Freedom Festival Snowshoe, West Virginia July 17th and 18th 2009

Hello! We’re here in Snowshoe West “By God” Virginia! It’s so neat to be back in the wonderful hills. We got in yesterday around 11:30am, and got settled into our really neat rooms/condos at the Snowshoe Mountain Resort. It is so beautiful here and the hospitality can’t be beat. The Freedom festival is a huge biker event and man these people are here to party! We had a great show last night at the Expo Center here on site, and last night was extra exciting because it was the first sale night of our official album that is now out. Tonight’s show will be with Trent Tomlinson and that should be cool. We’ve been walking around quite a bit. It rained a little, but it didn’t stop us from taking in the vibe. There’s a cute little village of shops within walking distance of our rooms and they have a lot of ski/outdoor gear, food, coffee rentals etc. It has cooled off a little bit for today, but it’s still comfy, so I’ll probably go find a hiking trail somewhere. Hope not to see any bears out there!

We just finished our last show at Snowshoe! All I can say is what a blast we had! We had an awesome show and the people really seemed to dig us. Ha ha, Trenna had a “secret admirer”.., well, he made himself known during our show by dancing up close and personal down at the foot of the stage. Things didn’t get ultimately out of hand, but it was enough to make Trenna blush! Yea, Trenna blushed! Anyhow, all went well. We signed and met folks, and now we’re back here getting ready to bus out back to Nashville. What a great time this was, I really hope that they’ll have us again really soon. I think that we’ll all sleep really well tonight, our bus driver does a really good job handling these curvy West Virginia roads. I grew up driving on these roads proudly! I hope I can come back to them again soon. See you all in Pierce, Nebraska on July 26th.

July 12th 2009 Brentwood Corn Fest Brentwood, CA.
Hi everyone! It’s been a quick turn around for us this past week. We’re already back on a bus heading through my beautiful home state of West “By God” Virginia. We flew back in from Brentwood on Monday. Poor Trenna was pretty tired last night, she stayed behind in San Francisco to visit family, so she’d just flown in! We had an awesome time out in Brentwood for their annual 2009 Corn Fest. There was corn everywhere! People were “all ears” for our show too. Ha! Sorry, the jokes only get worse. They treated us to food, and afterwards we went exploring around the festival. I myself went running right for their car show they were having! Wow, there were some beauties there! Now those are cars! Also gracing the streets were many displays of arts, crafts, jewelry, hats and festival food! They had rides for the kids and there was another stage set up that had bands playing. The weather was perfect and that also made for a wonderful show evening. We had a wonderful time and our show went very well. After the show, signed autographs and took pictures. Then we got to go hang out with Trenna’s family at their lovely home and got out for some rocking sushi! We’d wished we had more time, but we had an early flight out, but we hope to come back out and take in more of the West Coast scene soon! We’ll be writing to you again soon!
